The Great Southern Hotel, Sydney, is right at the bottom of the hill at the southern end of George Street in the city. It is in the Haymarket area, between the Central Railway Station, Broadway and the Chinatown area. It is right in the heart of Sydney’s food and entertainment district, and a short bus or taxi ride to the heart of the Sydney CBD and financial and business areas.
It is also a short walk from the hotel to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre or to nearby Paddy’s Markets, and a slightly longer stroll (400m/450 yards) to the Sydney Entertainment Centre and beyond that to Darling Harbour (700m/850 yards) and the Chinese Garden of Friendship.
The Great Southern Hotel is an AAA 4-star heritage-listed hotel that dates back to 1854, but the brick building you can see in the photo was built in 1999. The hotel has a 24-hour reception and an AAA star rating with 165 rooms. The hotel’s Executive Rooms contain one King size bed. Standard Rooms may have either one King-size or one Queen-sized bed. Check-in is from 14:00 hrs (2pm) and check-out is at 10:00 hrs (10am) or earlier.
The hotels’ facilities include an internet kiosk, guest laundry, luggage storage (at a small additional cost), a gymnasium, money exchange service, function rooms, a licensed restaurant and room service (with limited-hours).
The guests’ entrance to the Great Southern Hotel is at the left end of the ground floor of the building, because the rest of the street level area is occupied by the hotel’s public bar and gaming room, which is popular with the locals as well as the hotel’s residential guests.
