Opened in 1986, the Australian National Maritime Museum boasts some 27,800 items, including 7,820 archive series.

Part of the National Maritime Museum, the National Maritime Collection, concentrates especially on seven areas: Colonial Exploration, Maritime Archaeology and Ship Technology, Naval Service in Australia, Sport and Leisure, Economic and Commercial History, Indigenous Communities and Australia-USA Maritime Links.

  • Colonial Exploration - the discovery and exploration of the Australian continent prior to European settlement in 1788, subsequent charting and initial settlement 1788-1901. Both European and Asian contact, and the evolution of the navigational sciences, are included.
  • Maritime Archaeology and Ship Technology - ship and shipyard design and practice, operations, propulsion and equipment, and modern navigation systems.
  • Naval Service in Australia - including the (British) Royal Navy in Australian waters 1788-1911, the Colonial Navies 1855-1911 and the Royal Australian Navy since its inception in 1911.
  • Sport and Leisure and contemporary lifestyles - Australians have long used the water for relaxation and competition, and this is where the Australian National Maritime Museum covers the history of sport, leisure and contemporary lifestyles in Australia.
  • Economic and Commercial History from 1788 - Passenger travel and immigration; the trade and transport of goods; and industries which have harvested and mined the oceans and inland waterways.
  • Indigenous Communities - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a special relationship with the sea, and this area explores their continuing links with the sea and their ancient history.
  • Australia-USA Maritime Links - in 1988 a Bicentennial gift for Australia from the United States of America funded a permanent gallery in the Australian National Maritime Museum on the common development of the two nations and their many maritime connections, from trade to technology to sport.
