Government House Sydney Australia

Government House Sydney Australia.

Sydney’s Government House is half-hidden by trees, and lies in The Domain and lies just to the north side of the Conservatorium of Music right at the end of Bridge Street, off Macquarie Street.

The view from Government House looks north, out over the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Government House is the best example of a Gothic Revival building in the whole of New South Wales, and its ground floor has a truly excellent collection of 19th and 20th century art and antiques.

The rooms on the upper floor have been used, at different times, as private quarters for the Governor of New South Wales, visiting Heads of State from overseas, for Queen Elizabeth II of England, and for other members of the British Royal Family.

Entrance to Government House is free, and it is open to the public most days as long as there are no VIPs staying there. The grounds open from 10am to 4pm daily. The House is open Friday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm by guided tour ONLY.

Tours depart every half hour, starting 10.30am. The last tour begins at 3pm. Government House is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday.
