If you’re looking for temporary work in Australia your job search won’t be too difficult as long as you’re willing to work hard at whatever you can find..

Backpackers Work in Australia

If you’re, for example, an IT Specialist (that’s Information Technology, computers for the initiated) and you’re only willing to take temp work in IT, then your job search in Australia could take quite a while because the boom days of IT over here have passed and much of the work is being done by offshore workers. The world changes all the time, and work opportunities change as well. But they’re there if you are keen and on your toes.

If you have basic computer skills (MS Windows, Word, Excel spreadsheets etc.) then there are numerous “Temp” agencies in Sydney, and other large cities, who could use you. They are always looking for “fill in” staff to hold the fort while a client’s member of staff is on vacation or maternity leave.

And as long as you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and get dirty, then there’s still enough casual work around to make your job search in Australia a fruitful one. Many places welcome travelers with working-holiday visas.

Factories near the city often hire casual staff for temp work to help them cope with the extra workload as they gear up production for Christmas. Their need for casual workers is greatest between October and Christmas Eve, December 24.

Another possibility to help your job search in Australia includes casual work include working as a barman or barmaid. this requires a Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate, which costs about $80 (Australian currency).

Read the local newspapers for the details of training companies. If the bar you work in has slot machines (poker machines, one-armed bandits) then you may have to do a similar course for a certificate for responsible Gambling service as well. It’s a pain, but it’s the law.  The good news is that you can usually pay for both training courses together and get a reduction on the total fee.

Farm Work in Australia

Speaking of “fruitful”, Australian fruit growers regularly hire casual workers each season for fruit picking, so you could live and work on a farm for a few weeks. Also, if you have experience looking after horses, you may be able to find work on one of the many horse studs or stables either in Sydney or outside in the NSW country. The Hunter Valley north of Sydney has many horse studs. Remember that, whatever you do, being on a farm is hard work. On the plus side, you will get the chance to meet and make new friends, and when you finish the work there, you’ll be able to continue your working holiday with a modest wad of cash in your pocket.
